MobiMB Mobile Media Browser
is one the newest products to enter the LogoManager family, created by Mike
Bradley and the team at UK based
LogoManager.
This tool has been specifically designed to interface with the latest colour
phones, from my personal favourite mobile phone manufacturer
Nokia.
Features:
- Browse your phone's folders using a simple explorer-style user interface
- Drag & drop ringtones and graphics into the phone to use as a ringtone/logo
- Drag & drop Java MIDlets into the Games and Applications folders on
your phone
- Uploads files without affecting their original quality
- Select colour wallpaper, operator logo or startup logos from your PC
- Save your existing items to your PC (some files may be restricted by
Nokia, e.g. copyrighted ringtones)
Product Requirements:
- Operating system: Windows 98, Me, 2000 or XP
- Software environment: Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher
- Memory: 32MB
- Hardware: Standard IrDA compatible infrared port or FBUS cable or DLR-3 cable
or DKU-5 cable, dependent on model
- Devices: Nokia 7210, 3510i, 6100 or 6610 (Java upload also available on some
other models)
Owners of Nokia's 7210, 3510i, 6100 and 6610 models can make use
of the software to browse the 'gallery' folder on their phones - to drag and
drop images, MIDI files (polyphonic ringtones) and Java MIDlets (mobile games &
applications).
The user can transfer files from their hard drive to totally customise their
mobile phone to their liking.
Installation:
MobiMB was as simple to install as any other Windows program, entering your
purchased license information during the setup and was the whole setup was
completed in a very short space of time. Once installed you need to configure
your mobile phone connection properties - how your mobile phone is connected to
your PC. I have an Infrared port on my PC, so I setup the program to use this to
'talk' to my mobile phone:

How to do this is detailed in the
'Help' file, should you get stuck.
The Program:
Once setup and you run the program for the first time, you are greeted with
the similar Windows interface, and so the program is very simple to use and get
to grips with instantly.
After a couple of seconds, MobiMB will try to detect a mobile phone
attached to your PC - when it does the blank spaces in the program are populated
(your mobile should be connected to your PC by cable or through Infrared by
activating Infrared option on your mobile phone, before loading the program):

Here you can see the program has
successfully found and is communicating with my mobile phone :

MobiMB has two main areas,
the part on the left fills with the mobile phones data folders and follows a
simple 'tree' layout similar to Windows Explorer and the part on the
right, which fills with the content of the current selected folder.
Browsing folders is a simple as clicking on the folder you wish to view, below
we can see the content of the 'Games' folder on the mobile phone:

Should you not like the 'detailed'
view on the right side, you can change the view by using the 'View' menu - again
this is the same as Windows Explorer and so is intuitive to users:

Dragging and dropping transfers
the file to the mobile phone, a progress bar is displayed as the file is being
transferred to the mobile phone showing the progress of the data transfer:

For games and applications the
process is exactly the same...
Java MIDlets are distributed in two parts, a .jad file and a .jar file. The .jar
file is the package containing the application itself. Simply drag the .jad file
into either the games or applications folder and it is transferred and installed
onto the mobile phone.
The program also allows you to take files 'off' the mobile phone, to backup to
your PC and also to delete files on the mobile phone, say to free up memory or
just to get rid of them. These functions are accessed by right-clicking on the
file, which brings up an option menu:

Also on this menu, are three
functions that can be used when an image is selected:
- Operator Logo
- Wallpaper
- Startup Logo
These set the image selected as one of the three options e.g. as a Wallpaper.
Should you make a mistake or wish to 'restore' the default images, the 'File'
menu provides you with this option to reset it to the factory default:

Common graphic formats, such as
JPEG and GIF are supported by the Nokia model's and so almost any image can be
used or created. They also support MIDI files for polyphonic and mono ringtones.
The 7210 and 6610 have screen sizes of 128x128 pixels and support colour
operator logos of 100x50 - use of the program and some of its functions is
dependent on your mobile phone model:

Conclusion:
Overall I was impressed with MobiMB it allowed me to totally
customise and backup my mobile phone to my liking.
It is very easy to use and get to grips with as it uses the familiar Windows
Explorer style interface. The 'Help' menu provides good instructions on how to
setup and use the program and is clear enough for any user to understand should
you get stuck.
This program is a must for any owner of compatible Nokia mobile phones who wish
to customise their phone, although the one off registration fee might discourage
some users from making a purchase.
At £14.95 some users may think it is too expensive - but with the massive,
growing free resource of wallpapers, games and ringtones etc... available on the
Internet, in the long run it is well worth the cost.
